Originally airing earlier this year in Japan, FUNimation’s streaming of Doamayger-D is welcome because it’s the kind of thing short-form shows can do best; something that stands out against the sea of everything else. With it being done in windowboxed form and old school style animation, we get something distinctly 60’s and early 70’s here with lots of little gags as the mecha Doamayger-D deals with all the confectionary problems in the land. These come in the form of old school monsters in simple form and is essentially the big action end sequence from shows of old – complete with the theme song playing throughout the majority of it. It’s so old school that it actually wraps right back around to the present.

In Summary:
In a sense, I have no clue what happened here. What I do know happened here is that I had an absolute hoot watching this kind of visual presentation combined with the music. It plays up the style beautiful in homage to what came before and adds in a lot of smaller silly moments that just ups the enjoyment for old school fans while also being quirky enough to draw in younger fans. While I’m not a huge fan of the time period and most of the shows from this era, this one treats it in a great way with a smile and love and leaves me wanting more, even if I know there won’t be much in the way of story and character along the way.
