While things have been kicking around for a bit with a new Jack Ryan movie that Chris Pine is set to take on the starring role in after it was made famous through portrayals by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, things are now coming together. Paramount has set a timeframe for it with it being a fall 2013 release with plans for it to be the start of a trilogy. The general plan with it, featuring a younger actor in Pine, is to go back to the earlier days of the characters career and work from there. It has a lot of potential as it’s bringing in Tom Hardy as a fellow spy (with word that it could lead to his own feature) and Keira Knightley as Jack’s wife. Add in Kevin Costner as an older CIA liason for the two spies and massage with Kenneth Branagh as the villain? What more could you want? Branagh to direct? Done and done as he’s set for the project.
According to Branagh, the film will be “an original story that allows us to understand how Jack Ryan develops into a CIA analyst, before joining, and perhaps even joining, the CIA. It’s a very contemporary action thriller set in the here and now.”
With it being over a decade between the 2002 outing and this one, it’s surprising that Paramount hasn’t managed to get something together sooner. They’ve been working on this project since 2009 and have gone through several screenwriters as well as one attached director as Jack Bender was tied to it before departing after delays.
