What They Say:
The series will be about 12 “pillow boys” (makura no danshi) with a diverse range of personalities. They all reside in a town and each individual pillow boy will star in his own episode on a weekly basis. It’s also revealed that the series will take on a first-person perspective to detail their story in a smooth and elegant way.
The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Pillow Boys draws to a close here with its final episode by heading back to visit Merry again, which isn’t too much of a surprise overall considering how shows like this can work. With Merry being your simple teenager pillow boy, we get that young skewing aspect here as he talks about cats and the way they make him feel, which has him hugging his pillow. He’s a little more flirtatious than the first time we saw him, but he also does his best to win over the viewer with a number of cute attempts only to get repeatedly shot down. When it all shifts to getting a hug, well, the show just gets to one of its weirder places with that slow pan over him, both from above and from the side, that really is comical when you get down to it. And yes, I’d say the same thing if he was a she.
In Summary:
Merry was not one of my favorites from this series and going back to spending a few more minutes with him doesn’t do much. I halfway expected a big pillow-fest at the end here with everyone, but it makes sense that they’d go back to this form and allow him to bookend the series – with a few quick cuts of amusement at the end with his form. I totally get the point of a series like Pillow Boys and I laugh at the number of folks that are offended by the show yet would pay handsomely for it if it was toplined by cute girls. Every show finds its audience and while Pillow Boys wasn’t for me I’m sure if found a number of fans that delighted in it week after week. It’s not something that I suspect we’ll see again soon, though I imagine it’s definitely on the cheaper side to produce overall and worked to showcase a range of voice actors.
