Star Wars Thursday: Gaming Edition

Star Wars Thursday: Gaming Edition Just this week I attended a fun event at a local educational game store. Marbles: the Brain Store invites teachers to come out one Tuesday evening a month and try out some of their games. The staff was a lot of fun, and really got us involved. We played a few that required visual memory, and I came in last place every time. Then we played one that was more about being flexible and creative… and it got me thinking…

What games would some of my favorite Star Wars characters like to play if they came to visit for a day?

Snake Oil was the game that started me down this particular path. One person at the table chooses a customer type (in our game we had “ninja”, then “vampire”). The others get 5 randomly chosen object cards, and have to combine two of them into a product, which they then give a quick sales pitch to the customer. I could easily picture Lando Calrissian being a master at this game, given his slick sales style.

My sons bought themselves a fun ball called the Perplexus Epic that challenges fine motor and dexterity skills. When I asked them to tell me which Star Wars character they thought would enjoy this one, they both agreed it would be perfect for Jedi younglings in training. This, of course, was followed by at least 10 minutes of discussion on exactly how the younglings would use the Force to hold the ball up and move it around. Judging by the number of times my boys needed to take a deep breath and control their emotions to be successful, I’m sure this toy would help keep young Jedi busy for hours at a time.

Fast Track was another huge hit with the boys. With its quick pace, the ability to fling little wooden disks across the board, and the occasional disk flying across the store all made this game a total giggle fest for them. We all agreed that Han Solo would love Fast Track, especially since he’s so quick on the draw. He might have to rethink his competitive nature if he played Chewie though. Would he “let the wookiee win?”

While the games I’ve mentioned above are all tabletop or electronics-free games, I just have to mention one final arcade-like mocked up game that is online. You see, when I started writing this post I had trouble getting any ideas to flow. So I took to Twitter to see if I could get some crowdsourced ideas. My twitterpal @Geeksoap is a bit of a Greedo fan. For some reason, she thinks that Greedo would be addicted to playing Q*bert. There must be some obscure internet rule that states, “If you can think of it, it exists somewhere online”, because one quick search later and I found a masterpiece… Go ahead – click it . You know the curiosity might just kill you if you don’t.

What games would your favorite Star Wars character like to play? Leave a comment or tweet us an idea! Until next week – may the Force be with you.
