Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Shows about sisters can be pretty hit or miss a lot of the time, but when done in short-form style it eliminates a lot of the problem areas and just goes for the wacky comedy. Having two teenage girls myself and seeing their humor and weirdness in action regularly, I totally get things like this on some level. The show here takes the Nonomoto sisters off to fish this time around, though it goes in weird directions from the start with Ai consuming copious amounts of fish in order to deposit them on the raft. The show really wants to spend its time talking about the legend of the lake, which has me thinking of Ranma of course, but it instead goes with a kind of kids-oriented Loch Ness approach with a tragic side to the place in general. It deals with a dark secret under the water that needs to be dealt with, but it’s more about just weird layers upon layers that result in the girls stepping up to do something about it.
In Summary:
Silly is as silly does and Magical Somera-chan is simply silly. When you deal with reprogramming your villain by tickling him first and then messing with his mind through electronics, you’re not looking for anything deep. The show does have its moments but it continues to work that approach of being wacky-weird and running with whatever comes into mind. Which can certainly work, but it does leave me feeling a bit less enthused in general after the initial grin or two over certain elements.
